Six Things That Should Never be Flushed Down the Toilet

Be careful what you flush down your toilet. A toilet clog can be a terrible problem, especially for a family living in a home with only one bathroom. One of the easiest ways to avoid a clogged toilet is being mindful of what you do and do not flush. In Manhattan, plumbing systems are known to be old and finicky, so you must treat them with care. By never flushing items on the list below, you significantly reduce the risk of toilet clogs.

Cigarette butts are not biodegradable, and so the water in the toilet will not dissolve them. Cigarette butts easily get lodged in grime left in plumbing pipes. Also, cigarette butts are full of toxic chemicals, which should not be added to the water supply.

Many band-aids are made from plastic, and as a result, they are not biodegradable. Even band-aids made from cloth are still known to clog drains. Used band-aids belong in the trash, not the toilet.

Dental floss can easily tangle with other debris and itself. It is common to find dental floss as a primary culprit of toilet clogs.

Kitty litter should not go in the toilet. Cat waste can, but not the litter they usually go in. Kitty litter has clay which builds up quickly in pipes.

Feminine hygiene products expand as they absorb water. They can block pipes and prevent other debris from passing through.

Wet wipes sold in most stores advertise that they can be flushed, but that is not the case. You should avoid flushing flushable wipes.
