FOR ALL YOUR PLUMBING NEEDSThere are few things worse than losing plumbing and not having hot water during the cold days of winter. There is something special about being able to get out of the cold and into a hot shower or bath. It is rejuvenating and life-affirming. Living in NYC, our winters can get very cold, which puts our plumbing systems in jeopardy. If not prepared, pipes will freeze and burst, causing the potential loss of hot water and creating home flooding. Who wants to deal with this when it’s only 10 degrees outside?
There are several things that all homeowners in New York City can do to decrease their home plumbing system’s susceptibility to damage from cold weather.
Are your plumbing pipes insulated? When we get cold, we wear a coat or blankets. When pipes get cold, we put an insulating jacket on them. Taking the time and money to insulate vulnerable pipes is one of the best things you can do to prep for winter. A Manhattan plumber can both identify pipes in need and also protect them.
Disconnect all outdoor hoses and properly store them. This means an owner must make sure that all water is out of the hose. Once disconnected, place a specialized Styrofoam cover on each faucet to prevent cold breezes from blowing into the faucets.
Dirty gutters are known to trap water. If trapped water freezes, it could break the gutters. The ice will deform and create holes in gutters.
It would be best if you also had your water heater serviced.
Give your home plumbing a little TLC this Fall. It will pay off come winter.
